San Luis Obispo, which lies 190 mi (305 km) north of Los Angeles, is known for its happy demeanor. The residents are healthy and fit and live in an environment that encourages small businesses, and this upbeat yet relaxed atmosphere spills over into its tourism. The California city is a short 10 mi (16 km) from the west coast and attracts those interested in wine with its well-established vineyards and wineries. It has a long history too from the founding mission in the 1770s to the honor of being home to the first ever motel, the Milestone Mo-Tel. It was built in 1925 but is no longer a place to stay. However, given there are plenty of reasons for one to stop here for an extended vacation, there are numerous places to lay one's head, including an array of hotels and motels as well as a few other accommodation options.
AROUND MONTEREY STREET
The majority of the hotel rooms are located along Monterey Street, which is just south of Highway 101 at Junction 204. This street is affectionately known as ‘Motel Row’ because it literally has one place to stay after another dotted along the road. California Polytechnic State University is close by on the north side of the highway and the downtown is a half dozen blocks further southwest along Monterey Street. There are also a couple of upscale independent hotel choices on this historic street for those looking for a little more luxury. HIGHWAY 101 & DOWNTOWN
A second small group of hotels is situated a mile or so further along Highway 101 at the junction for the downtown area. In this area there are a couple of mid-range and budget choices, and these hotels are still relatively close to Cal Poly University. A couple of lodging options also exist in the downtown area, one o which is the Garden Street Inn, a small traditional Victorian place with fireplaces and antiques and old world charm.
SOUTH OF TOWN / MADONNA ROAD
At the southern end of San Luis Obispo and still close to the main highway through the city there is a further small collection of hotels, around Madonna Road in particular. A short 10 mi (16 km) away from San Luis Obispo towards the coast and close to Avila Beach is the resort hotel of Sycamore Mineral Springs.
